Thursday Day 78

June 21, 2018

PCT Mile 1157-1176 Karen mile 977

#hiatus

I’m just gonna say this: I’ve hiked a lot by myself in the past. Today, I found myself hiking alone and it really felt no different. Actually, the only thing that was different was my pack was heavier. But really, as much as we all started alone out here, the best part of this experience has been the people I have met and will hopefully continue to meet. Honestly, I can hike any day by myself…. I didn’t need to come all this way to end up back where I started.

And that’s my rant.

It was a pretty ordinary day altogether. Laura, Andrew and I went for breakfast at PJs. It’s the restaurant at the golf club that Andrew was playing at. After breakfast, Laura dropped me off at the trailhead. She walked a loop with me and brought her dog Nic with us. We said our goodbyes–and see you soons.

There weren’t many people out today. I passed 4 ladies who were all out day hiking and saw 6 others in a group heading south, but they weren’t PCTers. I was passed by one PCT guy headed north but that was it. He hardly said hello to me as I was just packing up from my first break.

The trail miles went by fast today. I did a few more than I planned as the campsite I was headed for was full of tree debris, so I had to go another mile further downtrail. This site isn’t much better but it was maintenance free so I called it a day. I figured the further I made it, the closer I’d be to Sierra City. If I wake up early enough, I might be able to make it there tomorrow like I originally planned. Otherwise I’ll be there early Saturday. But right now I’m 18.5 miles away and it’s 1.5 down highway 49 to town. I’ll see if the knees don’t fall off by midday tomorrow.

I had my tent and dinner set up just before 7. Not bad for starting the day at 930am.

Its weird to camp solo. So quiet here, except for the birds that are still chirping. I will say that the weather was perfect today, just hot enough to feel it. And I love all the butterflies that are finally out. I’m gonna call it a night tho. Again, pretty uneventful hiking when it’s just me. Hmmmm.

  1. Way to go Karen! Your blog keeps the trail so alive for me, like I can just actually feel like I’m still on it (in reality, wish I were, but Cuba was worth the side trip). The joys of solo hiking are so hard to explain to someone who hasn’t done it, where as the joys of meeting fellow PCT’ers are easy to understand. Love them both! Fossil

  2. Thanks for stopping by our angel camp today Karen, and for inspiring us readers to do hard things. When was the last time you made a memory by watching TV safely in your house?
